Pattern Testing

Fireweed Dress

Sherri of Sofiona Designs is one of my favorite internet friends. She is so personable, creative and being in her testing group is so much fun! For only being a one year old company, Sofiona already has an impressive catalogue of unique designs with imecable drafting and trendy details. Her newest relase, the Fireweed dress, is no exception!

It was so awesome to have my sister-in-law and her kids move to our small town at the beginning of summer. They have always lived out west, at least 18 hours away, which means we only got to see them once a year or so. Now that they are less than a mile away, my 12 year old niece and I are bonding over a love of fashion! The Fireweed was perfect for her debut as a pattern tester model. ; )

this pattern is drafted for woven fabrics with a fully lined bodice and invisible back zipper. Since you know I can never leave well enough alone, I added and extra layer and did my final version in this amazing floral chiffon that I found at Hobby Lobby three years ago and have been hoarding for the perfect project!

Just look at those amazing princess seams! You can also add a flounce ruffle there. We felt it was a smidge too ruffled for the middle school set, so I left it off. But be sure to check out the Sofiona Facebook group and all the tester versions to see some fabulous ruffle action. : )

There are two skirt options, a gathered skirt, and a full, hi-lo circle skirt. Of course we chose the circle! And after cutting out the front, hit a snag! A size 10 circle skirt is significantly bigger than a size 4 circle skirt, which is what i usually sew these days. And since this was seasonal Hobby Lobby fabric (please PLEASE bring it back!! I will buy a whole bolt!!!) there was no chance of getting more. So we did some creative cutting with the back pieces, some bias cut drape-age that makes a cool asymetrical feature in the back. Completely unintentional, and definitely not part of the pattern! Let this be a lesson in grainlines, people. ; p

We are both so thrilled with the finished product! It fits like a glove, but is so comfortable, not at all tight. Very on trend with the romantic vibe that is all over H&M this summer. Pick p your copy and make the tween in your life feel like the princess she still secretly pretends to be!

Never go out of style,

Jenny
