Project Run and Play

Project Run and Play Sews a Rainbow

When I was 9 years old I started drawing paper dolls. My favorite set was a collection I named “Rainbow Girls”. Very original, I know. 😉 There were 7 dolls, and each had a monochromatic wardrobe in one color of the rainbow. Or whichever color of marker wasn’t all dry and crusty. Every few years, I would draw a new set, admiring how my darwing skills and fashion taste had improved. Those paper dolls are a time capsule in popular fashion trends from 1994 through 2003. 🤣🤣🤣 Someday I’ll pull them out and photograph them for your enjoyment.

Given that background, I was super pumped to participate in this rainbow themed Project Run and Play pre-season sew along! So without further ado, here are my 6 rainbow looks! 😄🎉😄 Maybe not on the cutting edge of fashion trends, but definitely a snapshot of childrens clothing in 2018. And this live doll is not always as cooperative in photoshoots as my paper models from years ago. 😜

My red look is a riff on the Queen of Hearts. Off with her head! Unless she has ruffles! Yards and yards and yards of ruffles! 😄😄

Pattern: heavily modified Marissa dress from Violette Field Threads

Fabric: Cotton sateen from Fabric.com // Ivory and black stripe stretch cotton from Fabricland Canada // trim from Hobby Lobby

We don’t wear a lot of orange around here (does anyone?!) so the only thing I could come up with was a pair of my favorite Canterbury knickers in this great coral/orange canvas. Although the dust I had to brush off the bolt before taking it to the cutting counter speaks to how popular this color is. 😏

Pattern: Canterbury Knickers from Lil Luxe Collection

Fabric: Neon coral canvas from Fabricland Canada // gold buttons from JoAnns

I have had this romper in my head for almost a year, but i was too nervous to cut into these cute lemons! This was my push to jump in and do it and I am SO glad I did! It was our most worn outfit alllllll summer long!

Pattern: lightly modified Kaitlynn romper from Violette Field Threads

Fabric: Yuma lemons knit by Art Gallery Fabrics, purchased from Hawthorne Threads // trim from Hobby Lobby

We love the Kaitlynn so much, I used it as a top for my green look too! I kust lengthened the bodice about three inches and hemmed it. I also used my last precious Nani Iro scrap for this top, and I don’t think she appriciates it as much as she ought to. The green is a gorgeous chambray that I gor from Cali Fabrics and it’s almost iridescent! straight up cotton that looks like its shimmering like tafeta. So soft, and SO cool!!! I would buy 10 yards of all the colors if they brought it back! (please? 😀😀😀)

Patterns: Kaitlynn Romper from Violette Field Threads, cut as a top // Berklee shorts from Violette Field Threads

Fabric: amazing green Robert Kaufman chambray, purchased from Cali Fabrics (please bring it back!!!! I want more!) // Nani Iro double gauze, purchased from Miss Matatabi Fabrics on Etsy

This blue dress was made with fabric I bought on my surprise 10 year anniversary trip to Hawaii!!! Yes, I am oblivious enough for my husband to be able to surprise me with a two week vacation, all details figured out and accounted for. The only thing I had to do was type up a schedule for grandparents to follow the night before we left. I usually go nuts with design on things, but I like the simplicity of letting the fabric speak for itself on this one 💕💕💕

Pattern: Elodie dress from Violette Field Threads

Fabric: cotton print from a fabric store in Hawaii

This purple look is actually a pattern test from Violette Field Threads, but i needed a purple thing for this sew along and ai wanted to take advantage of the lilacs that grow wild all over up here along Lake Ontario! They are gorgeous, and the whole city smells like lilac for at least three weeks every spring. It’s glorious!

Patterns: Berklee shorts and tank from Violette Field Threads

Fabric: lavender seersucker from Fabric.com //cream double gauze from Fabricland Canada // cream lace from Fabricland Canada

Well, that’s the end of the rainbow for this set! Someday, maybe I will pull those dolls out and bring my designs to life! That would be both hilarious and awesome. 🤣🤣🤣

Happy Sewing!
